Tahira Chloe Mahdi,
author 1. Na’Imah made it clear in the beginning
that when hearing God, she was hearing her own voice.
Yet, she referred to God as “He”.
Did you find any significance in this contradiction? 2. How do you think Na’Imah feels that she
benefits from dating Aaron? 3. Whom do you think Na’Imah appreciates
most as a friend – Brite or Amber? Why? 4. What effect do you think Na’Imah’s
family relationships have on her actions? Consider
her brother Bilal, her mother, her Aunt Justine, her Grandmother, and the uncle
she speaks of. 5. Many 21-year-olds assume that their age
gives them wisdom when, in fact, they are only beginning to learn major life
lessons. In what areas do you feel
Na’Imah is most naïve? 6.
Since childhood, Na’Imah battled painful sexual issues including abuse,
abortion, and unfaithful boyfriends. The
exploration of these issues led Na’Imah to a minor breakdown.
What other sanity-threatening issues are women struggling to deal with? 7.
Do Na’Imah’s choices seem in any way influenced by entertainment?
Why or why not? What other
factors are there to consider in why she made such choices? 8.
Do you think that Na’Imah will stop drinking, experimenting with drugs and/or
using sex as recreation? Why or why
not? 9.
Do any of the characters remind you of anyone you know?
Do any of the characters remind you of yourself at a certain age?
